Taking shower design to new heights

Client - Mega Glass

Pipsqueak has recently completed a design and consultancy engagement for Mega Glass, a major UK manufacturer of bespoke glass and mirrors.

It involved solving an unusual design problem for a shower enclosure, just the challenge the PipSqueak  team love.

The challenge:

Mega Glass are experts in bespoke glass products. But when glass is but only one part of a structure, like a shower enclosure, there are a wider array of design challenges to overcome.

For this project the end client had commissioned an unusually tall shower enclosure, 2.5M in height. Mega Glass had access to a number of industry-standard designs, but none addressed this requirement. It simply hadn’t been tried before.

The height requirement created more glass weight, leading to glazing stability concerns.

Enter PipSqueak to come up with the design solutions.

The solution:

Creating a shower enclosure that was stable, whilst remaining narrow and stylish, would take a new design approach.

It had to be manufacturable and cost-effective, whilst also incorporating specific requirements from the interior design team on finish and colour

Normally glass in a shower enclosure would sit within rubber seals. The rubber component was a vulnerability in this case. So PipSqueak devised a method of using the bonded glass as a main structural element and redesigning the seal to allow this to happen.

Pipsqueak also produced an unusual and, if we may say so, very attractive piano-style hinge design to avoid the enclosure having too bulky a form.

The outcome:

Pipsqueak were able to go beyond just solving the design challenges, we also consulted on the production method itself to help Mega Glass ensure they had a complete solution to their client’s needs.

The outcome is… something the market has never seen before!

It was a complex project, a full year in execution, but has created a genuine innovation in the design of tall shower enclosures.

Perhaps it will find a market amongst basketball players, they must have had to crouch in the post-game showers all these years :)
